Seeing Sideways: Assignment Ilostcountbecauseit'salmostbreakanddon'tcareaboutnumbersanymore

So, this week we are supposed to make up a holiday. I quite like this idea, as who doesn't like holidays? You get the excuse to take a load off, eat lots of food, see people you (hopefully) like, and sometimes even get and receive gifts. We need more holidays, I feel. And not necessarily ones where we are expected to give gifts, like the greeting card companies seem to enjoy fabricating. Just a time to be with people we love, eat things we love, and generally be groovy and mellow.

Good lord I sound like a hippie who enjoys his reefer. Anyway.

My holiday isn't one I've made up necessarily, but it is one that I feel more people should recognize exists. My holiday is the Mental Health Day.

Mental Health Day can be any day or series of days during the year. It generally occurrs when one is too stressed or overworked to deal with the rest of the world. Typical customs for celebrating this holiday include (at least for me) catching up on sleep, catching up on homework, eating comfort food, playing video games, sewing, catching up on housework, writing, reading, and watching TV and/or movies.

Mental Health Day can be celebrated in numerous ways, and it is possible that it knows no cultural bounds. Everyone needs a day off from the rest of the world sometimes.

So the next time you're tearing your hair out due to stress, take a step back and schedule yourself a Mental Health Day. Curl up on the couch with your favorite munchies and the TV remote easily in reach, and tell the world to go fuck itself for the day. Or if you're extra lucky and have some vacation time saved up, tell the world to fuck itself for multiple days! Don't check your email, don't answer the phone, forget about venturing outside to check the mail. Though do make sure you still take care of your pets, as they are part of YOUR world, not the rest of the world.

Happy Mental Health Day!
